She+Him=Swell
By nick g | March 24, 2008

She and Him is a good band. Listening to them is almost like I’m listening to a really good juke box in a 50s country music bar. M-Ward and Zoey Deschanelle play some fine music together. It’s not even my cup of tea, but I enjoyed every bit of their performance at the Noise Pop closing night show at the Great American Music Hall March 2.
It was apparently their first performance, which showed in Zoey’s demeanor. She was never really comfortable with herself. There were moments of comfort, but I suspect she could be so much better with a dozen or so shows under her belt. The best part of the show was when she and M-Ward played a couple covers alone. She sang, he played and voiced some harmonies. It was such a good combination, the whole show could have literally been just She and Him with no backing band and it would have been fantastic.
The sound was terrible, an unusual thing to say for the Great American Music Hall, but it didn’t kill me. I bought overpriced drinks and sat through one good act - so and so from two gallants - and one terrible act - Whispertown 2000.
I couldn’t believe how bad this Whispertown 2000 band was. They had a song with whistling parts, and the girl who was designated to whistle couldn’t even fucking do it. The drummer is the only one who can fucking play, and he’s a better guitarist than drummer. They switched instruments and it was a travesty. At the end, I applauded them for stopping, not for finishing.
Incredible that they were to open for the most buzzed-about NoisePop show.
