    Am I missing something here?

    By nick g | November 3, 2009

So this story details the city of Windsor in the glorious wine country creating a family friendly atmosphere by regulating its “town green” portion of town to disallow certain businesses. Aside from the fact that this is absolutely akin to creating a master race by disallowing certain types of people, one part of the article perplexed me…

“As for tanning salons, she said ‘it’s not so much that they are evil,’ but like massage parlors, ‘they tend to use them for things they’re not supposed to use them for.’”

Uh… did I miss something? The article mentions Windsor banning tattoo parlors, check cashing businesses, pawn shops, head shops, and hot tub rentals, presumably  to avoid the type of people who patronize such businesses (especially hot tub rentals, who the hell wants an episode of Blind Date shot in their city?). But tanning salons?

Have tanning salons become the new massage parlor? Wha- when- huh? Is that why our girlfriends go to the tanning salon, even in the summer?

    Oh.

    I see.

    *****UPDATE*****

One day after the post on the article, the Windsor Town Council updated the ordinance to allow tanning salons. I guess they must be avid readers of Tonegazer.

That city looks horribly sterile as it is, no character at all. Kind of like Rohnert Park minus all the college kids.

It’s a shame that Sonoma County is now trying to emulate Napa as much as possible. Wine = money = a complete lack of authentic art and culture.

I am going to argue that it creates a different sort of culture and we are at an point in time where nothing can be claimed as “authentic”. Postmodern crisis. The windsor town green is a fake plastic place, they created a downtown from what used to be a total ghetto and scary neighborhood into an idealized version of a downtown that has never existed.
