Above pic is not from Santa Rosa. It is from The Internet. I cheat.

Downtown Santa Rosa was crawling with zombies this afternoon. Zombies promoting universal health care in the United States.

    WTF?

Seemingly strange connection to make, but Michael Houghton of Section M fame felt it was a good way to get the point across that we don’t want to become zombies - the living dead - so it’s time we all got health care. Why put on a concert downtown, though, and have people dressed up like zombies walk amongst the bros and wine lovers that patronize our fair city square? “I want the idea to spread sort of virally,” said Houghton. Funny guy, really.

Santiago put on a good set, as did a few other bands including the singer/guitarist from the Crux, who played acoustically with guitar and harmonica. I don’t know what any of those bands had to do with health care or zombies, other than politically leaning toward universal health care. But it was nice to see Santiago play after a few months off for a baby hiatus (congrats, Gabe).

This might be the first of many demonstrations like this downtown, as it’s a suitable venue and amplified sound is actually allowed with a permit. One of the few places in Santa Rosa the cops won’t bust you for playing music - but get a permit. Seriously.

In between the bands were skits and contests about health care. Some interesting facts came out of that part of the show, and it got people involved, which was the point of the thing, as far as I could tell. Let’s see more of this kind of thing in Courthouse Square. But please, have food next time. Other than brains, I mean.
