New Sunny Day Real Estate album in the works?
By nick g | October 16, 2009
Sunny Day Real Estate, a band which blazed the way for basically every band you like, is finishing up a reunion tour right now. After being split up since 1996 (their last two albums were produced without original bassist Nate Mendel) the group decided to tour. They have been playing a new song, too, which was written just before the tour started. Could this be the beginning of a new Sunny Day album with the original and extremely talented lineup?
At their show in San Francisco at the Filmore Oct. 13, the band announced it was going to play a new song, much to the excitement of the sold out crowd. Mostly in the over-30 demographic, the audience did not mosh, stagedive, squish or squeel like Beatles fanatics. But they did appreciate the new music, the first to be heard from the band since 2001’s flop “The Rising Tide.”
Afterward, guitarist Dan Hoerner, who never stopped smiling for the entire show, thanked the crowd the “letting us experiment on you.” The crowd went crazy. So does this mean the positive response will lead to more new songs? Maybe enough for at least an EP? a Japanese import of “newly discovered” works?
Let’s wait and see. My fingers are crossed.
*****UPDATE*****
The December 2009 issue of AP Magazine reveals the band IS in fact toying with the idea of a new album. Well, at least they’re going to record that new song we mentioned here BEFORE the AP article was released. Lead singer Jerey Enigk said it would be fun to record more than just the one song when they head into the studio.
AP Magazine must also be avid readers of Tonegazer…
