blood brothers
By nick g | February 5, 2008
it’s a bit late, but my favorite band was the blood brothers. i heard they broke up a few days after it actually happened. i was very sad. then i was angry. possibly in foolishness, i sent the band an email during the anger stage of our breakup. anyone who’s done it before knows this is not the way to handle a breakup. especially when you’re still in love with them. i even paid $40 to see jaguar love, johnny whitney and cody votolato’s new project, with queens of the stoner age at the warfield. i left 4 songs into queens - longer than i thought i’d stay.anyhoo, here’s my email to them, and the band’s email back
(which was rather unexpected to even receive).
On Nov 20, 2007 12:22 AM, i wrote:
“i think fans of the blood brothers deserve a real reason why the band
decided to break up. we supported this music not because it was cool,
or scene, or nice, but because it was different, exciting, new and
dangerous. the way the blood brothers’ songs are put together and the
ways they convey their message and art are so unique, that in thousands
of years of people making music it has never been duplicated.
that’s saying quite a bit about this music, because a lot of people
wouldn’t even call the blood brothers music. it could very well be
called noise, crap, anal bleeding, anything but music. but we choose to
call it music, and we embraced it. i personally was delighted to call
the blood brothers my favorite band, out of thousands of others i enjoy
and thousands of others i’m sure to discover. but now the band has
seemingly turned its back on thousands, probably millions, who gave
them a chance.
what does this say to other artists who choose to try something new,
rather than fuck the same dead horse while deaf and blind preteens
throw dimes at them? it says never try. bukowski also says never try,
but hes fucking dead, too.
im pissed about the band breaking up, but more pissed that there isn’t
a real reason given. it feels like jesus just stabbed ghandi (and not
the other way around) and then farted on him, for no reason.
so please, all im asking for is a reason, a real reason, and maybe
what the band members will do now.. i hope they can each make something
as inspiring as the blood brothers… but…
thanks.”
And Nov. 29, 9:01:57 p.m., i received back:
“Next time we’ll make sure to videotape ourselves breaking up so everyone can share the pain. ”
in true blood brothers fashion, i have been kicked in the balls.
