I thought the world was ending then I consulted Wikipedia. But I’m still leery.

ok… i got pretty freaked out when i read this.
OMAHA, Neb. — Billionaire Warren Buffett remains confident that America’s best days are ahead, but he says the nation likely will face higher unemployment and eventually inflation because of the current economic crisis.
Buffett said the nation’s leaders need to emphasize a consistent message, and they should support President Barack Obama’s efforts to repair the economy because fear is dominating Americans’ behavior.
Buffett said the economy has basically followed the worst-case scenario he envisioned six months ago.
“It’s fallen off a cliff,” Buffett said Monday during a live appearance on cable network CNBC. “Not only has the economy slowed down a lot, but people have really changed their habits like I haven’t seen.”
Buffett said the changes are reflected in the results of Berkshire Hathaway Inc.’s subsidiaries. He said Berkshire’s jewelry companies have suffered, but more people have been willing to switch to Geico to save money on car insurance. The three-hour-long interview aired from another Berkshire subsidiary that has been hampered by the economy, the Nebraska Furniture Mart store in Omaha.”
…….. WHAT THE!!!!!!!!!!!! Was that a fucking Geico ad stuck into the middle of a news story!!!?!??!?!?!?!??!??? WHAT THE FUCK!?!!?!?!?!?!? I thought it was an ad, and looked for like five minutes on the page and clicked the link twice more and it was a real story.

So, freaked out that the world was ending and that companies were actually starting to purchase advertising in real news stories, I consulted Wikipedia on the off chance that the story assumed that readers would know Geico is a subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway. Phew. It did, and it is. But still, the wording of it, to be exactly like the ads? That writer must have either been paid to do it like that or had a real sneaky sense of humor.

But I’m still leery. This doesn’t sit well with me at all. Nicolas is not pleased. I’m really really really worried about this. If advertising starts sneaking into things like news, what’s next?? It’s perceivable because print media is faltering so badly. Who would have thought just 10 short years ago that we would have had front page ads on the Wall Street Journal? Wrap around spadea over the vertical half of the San Francisco Chronicle front and back pages? I’m really scared that this wasn’t a joke or a coincidence. This is the feeling I get from a very bad, realistic nightmare. Powerless, uninformed, and all of my nerves are on edge. Like I’m being attacked or walking through a dark alley waiting for someone to jump out and fucking knife me. I’m scared about this.

That is really fucking scary, as if product placement wasn’t obnoxious enough. After not having cable for years I recently watched the news and was appalled at how casual and opinion oriented it all was. Newspapers are usually our last defense, and those are faltering as well. Now that people can just fast forward through commercials, they are having to find new ways to manipulate the public. So when is “The Griddle” going to have a Kraft foods segment? Mmm, chemical cheese corn pudding.

kraft can suck it.
