Albums to look forward to in ‘09

    1. The Appleseed Cast: Sagarmatha - Finally. These guys are one of the most unappreciated bands out there. With their characteristic dense instrumentation and soaring melodies, they have been a favorite for years.

    2. This Will Destroy You & Lymbyc System: Field Studies -  Instrumental rock in the same vein as Explosions in the Sky but harder, and not liked by shit tons of football fans.

    3. Grizzly Bear: TBA - Yes, I am a sucker for bands that have animals in their name, but Grizzly Bear create dreamy soundscapes that will truly carry you away.

    4. Sonic Youth: TBA - Hey, now that Starbucks is no longer releasing it, I might actually want to get it.

    5. David Bazan: “American Flags” 7″ - One of the hardest working songwriters out there. We’re hoping a new  7″ is only the beginning of what we can expect this year.

    6. Not To Reason Why: Would You Hug Fire? - The full length from these Sonoma County post-rockers is sure to make eyes pop out of skulls into the jaws already lining the ground from their first EP from 2007. Double vinyl-only? 10-minute song? Two drumsets on one track? Squirrel kazoo orchestra? I CAN’T WAIT!

    7. Zombi: Spirit Animal  - The perfect soundtrack to those 80’s horror flicks we just can’t get enough of.

    8. The Decemberists: The Hazards of Love -  Alright, your first major label release was amazing, we hope you can keep up the good work.

    9. Mt. St. Helens Vietnam Band: TBA -  One of the more promising new bands we had the pleasure of seeing live this year. Their thirteen year old drummer was awesome, what a lucky little dude.

    10. Morrissey: Years of Refusal - We will always love Morrissey, as long as he doesn’t start playing with Isaac Brock.

    Bands Not Worth the Hype

    1. Whispertown 2000 - One of the biggest live disasters we have witnessed in years (Noise Pop ‘08). Just because they’re friends with Jenny Lewis it doesn’t make them talented.

    2. Vampire Weekend - They made hipsters like ska without them even knowing it. Joke’s on you, assholes.

    3. Ida Maria - I’m not even going to excuse her awful lyrics on the fact that she’s foreign - it’s just bad.

    4.  Justice - Since when is remixing Britney Spears something worth celebrating?

    5. Katy Perry - You kissed a girl and you liked it. I didn’t, and that’s saying a lot because I’m a red-blooded American male.

    6. Guns n’ Roses - Chinese Democracy? I thought that was it’s name because it would never exist… and we all wish it was true.
