busking

Tonegazer fully supports DIY music and style. This is why when we came across a band playing on the streets of Union Square in San Francisco last night, we had to make sure the public knew about it.
Apparently it’s called busking. A band sets up on the street and just plays - no permit, no permission, no problem. The band was Mostro. A world-influenced rock band consisting of a drummer, guitarist/singer and digeridoo/percussionist/singer. They apparently just set up and started playing in front of Old Navy on Market Street. When I arrived there was a large crowd, and I stayed for four songs, as they finished out their set. Even bought a CD.
It was world-influenced rock music. Good stuff, really. They ended the set with their radio-friendly song, which, actually, would play good on most radio stations. It had a danceable beat and simple melodies. I hope these guys make it, I really do.
But besides their music, it was awesome to see a band just set up and play. They had a car (or boat) battery as a power source, and played two amps and an elaborate array of delay/effects pedals. I think one guy was Italian. They rapped a little bit, but the crowd (about 50 people) was really into it. They probably made more money than many bands do in a night, just in 30 minutes on the street as an impromptu performance.
Maybe Tonegazer will host impromptu shows such as this in a city (on the West Cost) near you. Stay tuned.
